Evidence

Science & Studies

The research behind each longevity tool, in plain language. Every study links to PubMed or its DOI, and we note what kind of study it is, so you can judge the evidence for yourself.

How to read these studies

  • RCT randomized controlled trial: people are randomly assigned to treatment or a control. The strongest single-study design.
  • Systematic review / meta-analysis pools many studies; only as good as the studies it includes.
  • Observational follows people over time and finds associations. It can't prove cause and effect.
  • Small study few participants or no control group. Interesting, but early.
  • Review a summary of existing research and proposed mechanisms.

Observational2015 · JAMA Intern Med

Association between sauna bathing and fatal cardiovascular and all-cause mortality events

In 2,315 Finnish men followed for a median of 20.7 years, more frequent sauna bathing was associated with lower fatal cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. This shows an association, not cause and effect.

Laukkanen T, Khan H, Zaccardi F, Laukkanen JA
Observational2017 · Age Ageing

Sauna bathing is inversely associated with dementia and Alzheimer's disease in middle-aged Finnish men

In the same Finnish cohort, more frequent sauna bathing was associated with a lower risk of a dementia diagnosis.
